David Mamet Essays *!@#$%&!!

I'm a fan of Mamet's plays but have recently become hooked on his essays as well.
Has anyone out there read them?
Which ones?
I've read "True and False", Writing in Restaurants" and "Bambi vs. Godzilla".
Let's discuss ...

Hey Edgar, I'm also a big fan of DM and I've read and/or own pretty much everything he's written or made on film I'm a big fan of the Unit, do you watch it? I'm based in the UK, I'm a director and a writer, I trained as an actor at the Atlantic Theater Company, the company Mamet set up.

I wonder if you think that Mamet's perspective and style has made him too much of an outcast, or whether film, theatre and writing in general requires this kind of iconoclast?

Welcome Mark - How did you find me ? My blog is only a day old and I don't know how the network works, yet. You are my first contact.
Yes, I enjoy The Unit as well. I too have his work on video and have dreamed of being in his plays. How fortunate you are to have studied at ATC.
I think that DM thrives on his outcast status. I have known people like him and it seems that people who are that "in your face" with their opinions have thick skins and are able to back up much of what they say because they know they will draw fire. And, yes, I think that film, theatre and writing requires this kind of iconoclast. where would the world be without these "creative irritants". DM is like the sand that enters the clam to make the pearl. I don't consider myself an intellectual and I must have my Thesaurus and (sometimes) my Oxford English Dictionary on hand to keep up with verbiage but I enjoy his committment to his ideas. Acting is hard and it needs the attention he gives it. I hate that (in America, at least) acting is so much about face and personality instead of skill. When I was at the Univ. of Minnesota (where I got my MFA) I had the pleasure of studying under Julia Carey, a British actor/teacher who brought to the program a rock-hard discipline. She pissed alot of people off but we learned alot also. DM has a home nearby and he eats at the small diner only a block from my house. I would love to run into him (as well as Rebeeca Pidgeon, William H. Macy and Luiz Guzman). Let's talk more later. Ciao!
